Trip Details

We depart from Cleveland for our overnight flight to Rome (via east coast gateway) aboard a wide-bodied jet. We enjoy in-flight movies, dinner and breakfast aloft.
Upon arrival in Rome we are greeted by our tour manager who will remain with us for the duration of our pilgrimage. Our first stop is Orvieto, one of the most dramatic townscapes in Europe, and the site of the Eucharistic miracle that inspired the Feast of Corpus Christi. We celebrate Mass at the Orvieto Cathedral, a 14th century Roman cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. After free time for lunch, we continue through Tuscany to Siena for dinner and overnight.
This morning we walk through the Gothic streets of Siena, exploring the most significant places in the life of St. Catherine in her native town. We celebrate Mass at the Basilica of San Domenico, where relics of St. Catherine are kept, surrounded by beautiful 16th century frescoes. We continue to her home, now the Sanctuary of Santa Caterina. It is also home to the miraculous crucifix from which she received the stigmata. We stop at the grand Basilica of San Francesco, where St. Bernardino began his religious career, and view the nearby oratory dedicated to him, containing splendid frescoes by Domenico Beccafumi, which depict episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary. Finally, we proceed to the famous Piazza del Campo, famous for the Palio bareback horserace, where we enjoy free time for lunch. We depart Siena and head to Assisi, in Umbria. Upon arrival we stop at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Portiuncula, Francis’ Church of the Little Portion, in the lower town. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Assisi.
After breakfast, we explore the hilltop village of Assisi, the home of St. Francis and St. Clare. We joyfully begin our day at the Basilica of San Francesco with Mass. After we pray at the tomb of St. Francis, we begin our walking tour of the village, including a visit to the Church of St. Clare to view the crucifix that spoke to St. Francis. We pass by the famous Temple of Minerva in the del Comune. This afternoon, we are free to explore the beautiful streets of Assisi. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
We depart after breakfast for Lanciano, the site of the oldest Eucharistic Miracle certified by the Church, where we celebrate Mass. We also visit the nearby Cathedral of the Madonna del Ponte, housing the famous Byzantine statue of the Madonna. We enjoy free time for lunch in this picturesque town, before we continue south to San Giovanni Rotondo to pay homage to St. Pio of Pietrelcina, a friar, a priest, and a stigmatist. Dinner and overnight at our hotel near San Giovanni.
This morning we visit the tomb of Padre Pio in Santa Maria delle Grazie sanctuary, where we celebrate Mass. We also see the Sala San Francesco where Padre Pio greeted the faithful, and his books and clothing are still on display. After lunch, we depart for Rome. Upon arrival in Rome, traffic patterns and time permitting, we enjoy a driving tour of the ancient sites including the Roman Fora and the Arch of Constantine, the Coliseum, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Rome.
Today we visit Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, to venerate the tomb of Saint Catherine, and to see its treasure, the statue of Christ the Redeemer before continuing to the adjacent ancient Pantheon, resting place of the artist, Raphael. We celebrate Mass here. After, we enjoy free time for lunch in the Piazza Navona, and then walk past the famous Spanish steps and finally throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. Our next stop is St John Lateran Basilica and the Holy Stairs, which are believed by many to be the staircase from Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem, brought to Rome by St. Helen in the 4th century. Our day ends with a visit to St. Paul Outside the Walls - the spectacular basilica where we pay homage to St. Paul the Apostle, at his tomb. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Rome.
Today you are free for personal adventure. Mass will be celebrated early at a nearby church or at our hotel. You may choose to visit the Vatican museums, or if there is enough interest, we may offer a private one-day excursion to Florence. Enjoy the culinary delights of Rome tonight, as dinner is on your own. Overnight at our hotel in Rome.
After an early breakfast, we visit the Basilica of St. Mary Major dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to celebrate Mass. After, we head to the Vatican and see Pope Francis, if he is in residence, at the Vatican window, as we participate in the Angelus. Afterwards, we enter St. Peter’s Basilica to view the Pieta and the tombs of the Popes. We have free time for lunch and shopping before heading back to our hotel. Our farewell dinner is at a restaurant in the cobbled streets of the Trastevere area of Rome. Overnight at our hotel in Rome.
Today we bid Arrivederci to Italia, with memories to last a lifetime.
