Today, we depart Tampa Airport to connect with our overnight flight to Rome aboard a wide-bodied jet. We enjoy in-flight movies, dinner, and breakfast aloft.
This morning, upon arrival in Milan, we are greeted by our Unitours Tour Manager, who will be with us during our travels. We board our motor coach for a short drive to the Duomo di Milano, one of the largest cathedrals in Italy and a gem of gothic architecture and magnificent stained-glass windows. While there we visit the crypt church and the tomb of St. Charles Borromeo, the first Archbishop of Milan and patron saint of seminarians. Following a break for lunch on our own, we continue to our hotel to refresh ourselves before our “welcome” dinner and overnight in Milan. Please add Mass where it fits into this day.
Today after breakfast, we visit the Santa Marie della Grazie, home of Leonardo di Vinci’s famous painting “The Last Supper”. We tour this magnificent church, as well as nearby Sforza Castle, a 15th century renaissance castle, which features numerous works of art and Michelangelo’s last work before his death. Following a break for lunch on our own, the remainder of the day is free to browse metropolitan Milan. This evening dinner is on our own. Overnight at our hotel in Milan. Please add Mass where it fits into this day.
This morning after an early breakfast we depart for our journey east to Verona, home to the famous novel “Romeo & Juliet.” We view the balcony of Juliet, inspired from the novel, as well as the enormous Roman Arena of Verona, the third largest in Italy! Following Mass in one of the Churches here in Verona. Lunch is on our own. We depart for a winery where we will have a wine tasting of Amarone and the most representative labels of Valpolicella. After the wine tasting our final stop is Venice! Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel in the nearby Mestre area for dinner and overnight at our hotel.
This morning after breakfast we enjoy Venice, the Queen of the Cities! The glories that are Venice have attracted Byron, Goethe, Wagner, Shakespeare and now you! Following Mass in one of her beautiful churches, time is spent this morning walking the sights of Venice: the splendid Piazza San Marco and the incredibly rich Byzantine Basilica of San Marco. We marvel at the intricate network of elegant squares lined with stately Renaissance villas and palaces. This afternoon, following lunch on our own, we are free for shopping, personal adventure, like a romantic gondola ride through the inner canals of Venice. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
This morning, we proceed to Florence. On our scenic drive through this beautiful countryside, we stop in Padua to celebrate Mass at Basilica of St. Anthony. We stop for lunch on our own along the way as we continue to Florence’s delightful nearby spa town of Montecatini Terme, whose streets invite us to stroll after dinner at our hotel.
where our first stop will be “Piazzale Michelangelo” for the best panoramic view of this spectacular city one could ask for. We proceed with a tour of the Academia Gallery, where we view one of Michelangelo’s most famous works, “David”. We continue with the celebration of Mass to the Duomo (also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), in the heart of the city and the fourth largest in the world! There we admire the cupola by Brunelleschi, completed in 1240, its campanile by Giotto. Once outside we view the Baptistery’s with its incomparable bronze doors by Ghiberti. We break for a leisurely lunch on our own at one of the many trattorias that dot the riverfront area, along Florence’s Arno River. The rest of the day is free for personal shopping, browsing this fascinating city on your own. We return to our hotel in Montecatini Terme for dinner and overnight.
This morning after breakfast, we return to Florence to spend more time in this beautiful city and visit the beautiful Basilica of Santa Croce where we will celebrate Mass. Among the most famous Italians interred here, lie Galileo, Rossini, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli. We continue our tour of Florence with the Piazza della Signoria, dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio and its embattlement crowned tower. Across from the Palace, we visit the Loggia dei Lanzi with the statues of the Perseus by Cellini; Giambologna's the “Rape of the Sabines” and “Hercules.” Following a break for lunch on our own, we enjoy some free time for shopping or personal adventure in any of the many art museums or to have a walk along the Arno River admiring the enchanting Ponte Vecchio. This evening, our included dinner location will be one of the restaurants of this enchanting city. After dinner we return to our hotel in Montecatini Term for overnight.
Today after breakfast, we journey through the Italian countryside arriving in the magnificent city of Siena, which invites us to stroll through its Gothic streets. After we celebrate Mass at the Dominican Church commemorating St. Catherine, we walk to the famous Piazza del Campo. This shell shaped square is the dramatic setting for the annual Palio bareback horserace. The piazza's focal point is the Palazzo Pubblico, the public palace, which dates to 1250. We continue uphill to the monumental Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary. We enjoy free time for lunch on our own and browsing. In the afternoon, we continue south through Umbria to our hotel in Rome, for dinner and overnight.
Today after breakfast, we visit Vatican City to we celebrate Mass below St. Peters. Afterwards, we see the treasures of the Vatican Museum. We marvel at Michelangelo’s restored frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and the wonders of St. Peter’s. This afternoon, following a stop for lunch on our own, we are free to further enjoy this fascinating city. This evening, we have a Farewell Dinner with entertainment at typical local restaurant. Return to our hotel in Rome for overnight.
This morning after breakfast, we make our way to St. Peter's for an audience with Pope Leo if he is in residence. This afternoon, after a break for lunch on our own, we tour the Basilica of St. Mary Major and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. This huge, imposing Basilica, second only to St. Peter’s and one of the largest churches in the Christian world, contains an unusual gallery of papal portraits: 265 tablets portraying the popes of the past. We celebrate Mass in one of these Basilicas. We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Today we make our way home with memories of a lifetime.
