Today we depart Logan International to connect with our overnight flight to Rome aboard a wide-bodied jet. We enjoy dinner and breakfast aloft.
Following our early morning arrival we meet our Unitours Tour Manager and board our coach for the beautiful seaside town of Sorrento. We stop for lunch on our own along our route before entering Sorrento. We celebrate our first pilgrim’s Mass at the Cathedral of Sorrento before checking in to our hotel for our “welcome” dinner and overnight in Sorrento.
This morning after breakfast, we depart Sorrento by ferry across the Bay of Naples to the Island of Dreams, Capri. We tour the island including Anacapri and weather permitting, the beautiful Blue Grotto. We break for lunch on our own and some leisure time before Mass at one of the wonderful churches here before we return to our hotel in Sorrento for dinner and overnight.
Today after breakfast and weather permitting (*), We depart from Sorrento by boat to the Amalfi Coast. Our first stop will be to the village of Amalfi. We visit the stunning Cathedral where we celebrate Mass. The Cathedral is home to the relics of St. Andrew, the patron and protector of Amalfi. Free time for lunch on our own. In the afternoon, we proceed to Positano. We visit the wonderful village and capital of Moda Mare. We return to Sorrento by boat, and transfer from port to our hotel for dinner and overnight. (*if the weather does not permit the excursion to Amalfi Coast it will be replaced with Caserta Royal Palace excursion.)
This morning after breakfast, we depart Sorrento and travel to Pompeii, the Roman City destroyed but preserved by the volcanic ash of Vesuvius in 79 AD. We visit the church of the Holy Rosary visited by Blessed John Paul II shortly before his death. We enjoy free time for lunch and shopping. We enjoy Mass at some point throughout our journey today or upon arrival in San Giovanni Rotondo. Early in the afternoon we continue to San Giovanni Rotondo for dinner and overnight.
Before we check out of our hotel we enjoy breakfast. Today, we celebrate Mass at the tomb of St. Padre Pio and visit the sanctuary. We proceed to the Shrine of Monte Sant’ Angelo, where we view the octagonal tower (campanile) of the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo (St. Michael the Archangel), as well as the impressive grotto, where the Archangel appeared three times to pledge protection for the nearby town of Sipontum from pagan invaders. We return to San Giovanni Rotondo, dinner and overnight.
This morning, we visit the Abbey of Montecassino, home to one of several Abbys St. Benedict established while expanding his order. It was at this location that he established the guidelines for how his order would live, and those guidelines became know as the Rule of Benedict. The original Abbey was destroyed numerous time but rebuild again and again. Following the celebration of Mass while there, we continue west towards Rome. We break for lunch on our own along the way. Dinner and overnight at our hotel in Rome.
Today after breakfast, we go to Vatican City where we celebrate Mass below St. Peters (pending availability of tickets). Afterwards, we see the treasures of the Vatican Museum. We marvel at Michelangelo’s restored frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and the wonders of St. Peter’s. This afternoon, following a stop for lunch on our own, we visit and celebrate Mass at the Basilica of St. Mary Major. We conclude our day with dinner at a nearby restaurant and overnight at our hotel.
This morning, we make our way to St. Peter's for an audience with Pope Leo (if he is in residence). After the Papal Audience, we visit the Holy Stairs and Basilica of St. John Lateran. We continue to St. Paul Outside the Walls. This huge, imposing Basilica, second only to St. Peter’s and one of the largest churches in the Christian world, contains an unusual gallery of papal portraits: 265 tablets portraying the popes of the past. We celebrate Mass while there. We enjoy our “farewell” dinner and overnight at our hotel.
Today we make our way home with memories of a lifetime.
