Today we depart our home airport to connect with our overnight flight to Rome aboard a wide-bodied jet. We enjoy in-flight movies, dinner, and breakfast aloft.
We arrive in Rome this morning where we gather our luggage, clear customs and are met by our guide and driver. With an early arrival we tour the sites of Rome. During our walking tour, we pass the Roman Fora, the Arch of Constantine, and the Coliseum. Following lunch on our own, we are escorted to our hotel for check in. The remainder of the day is at leisure as we settle in and get ready for our dinner at the hotel and overnight.
This morning, we make our way to St. Peter's for an audience with Pope Francis if he is in residence. After lunch on our own we visit St. Paul’s Beyond the Walls. This huge, imposing Basilica, second only to St. Peter’s and one of the largest churches in the Christian world, contains an unusual gallery of papal portraits: 265 tablets portraying the popes of the past. We celebrate Mass here and return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
We start our day at one of the Catacombs, burial place of early Christians. We celebrate Mass here and view the 2nd and 3rd century fresco paintings. This afternoon we visit two of Rome’s major basilicas, St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran. We also see the Scala Santa, purportedly the stairs that Christ climbed prior to his condemnation by Pontius Pilate. Then we go to St. Peter in Chains to view Michelangelo’s possibly most celebrated sculpture, the “Moses”. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
Following morning Mass at St. Peter's, we spend this morning seeing the treasures of the Vatican Museum. We marvel at Michelangelo's restored frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Continue to St. Peter's Basilica to view the “Pieta”. This afternoon we depart Rome and head south to the wonderful town of Sorrento along the Mediterranean for dinner and overnight.
This morning, we leave Sorrento by steamer across the Bay of Naples to the Island of Dreams - Capri. We tour the island including Aracari and weather permitting, the beautiful Blue Grotto. Following Mass at one of the churches here we return to Sorrento for dinner and overnight.
Today we motor along the Sorrento Peninsula to Pompeii, the Roman City destroyed yet preserved by the volcanic ash of Vesuvius in 79 AD. We then move on to San Giovanni Rotondo for dinner and overnight.
This morning we visit the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazia and visit St. Padre Pio’s tomb where we celebrate Mass. We visit the Grotto of Michael the Archangel. Six different popes and St. Francis of Assisi have knelt in prayer at this Grotto, seeking the protection of St. Michael. This afternoon we visit Pietrelcina, the town where Padre Pio was born. We see his native house and the Church of the Holy Family where we will find a convent and museum dedicated to St. Padre Pio. Later in the day, we travel to Benevento, and we check in at our Hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast we depart our hotel and travel to Montecassino. The Abbey of Montecassino is one of the most known Abbeys in the world. In 529 Saint Benedict chose this mountain to build a monastery that would host him and those monks following him on the way from Subiaco. We enjoy a guided tour of the cloisters and then up the big ramp to the Basilica at Saint Benedict and Scholastica's grave. After the visit we have free time for lunch and then on to Subiaco. It was here that Saint Benedict and his sister Scolastica retired at the end of the 5th Century and built five monasteries. We visit the Monastery of St. Benedict, which dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. We visit the Sacred Cave where Benedict lived as a hermit for three years. The staircase holds the earliest portrait of St. Francis without his halo or stigmata. We celebrate Mass here, then continue to Rome for dinner and overnight at our hotel.
Today we make our way home with memories of a lifetime.
