Trip Details

Today, we depart our home city for our overnight flight to Lisbon. We enjoy in-flight movies, dinner, and breakfast while aloft.
This morning, we arrive at Lisbon Airport, where we are met by our Unitours Tour Manager. We drive to Sintra, famous for its spectacular ocean views, rugged cliffs and stretches of sandy beach. We visit Pena Palace, Sintra’s most famous architectural icon. According to tradition, during the Middle Ages, after an apparition of the Virgin Mary, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena was built on the top of the hill above Sintra. A monastery was also constructed, which was ruined by an earthquake. King Ferdinand transformed remains of the monastery into a palace that became the summer residence for the Portuguese royal family. Following a stop for lunch on our own, we continue to St. Anthony Church, located on the very site where St. Anthony was allegedly born. While here we celebrate Mass. Afterwards, our panoramic tour of Lisbon includes the Discoveries Monument in honor of Henry the Navigator, who led Portugal’s expeditions in the New World and UNESCO World Heritage monuments like Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery. We transfer to our hotel for our “welcome” dinner and overnight.
Today, we drive to St. Stephen, the Church of the Eucharistic Miracle in Santarem, for a short visit. We proceed to the hamlets of Aljustrel & Valinhos and visit the birthplaces of Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia, to whom the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared six times, from May 13 to October 13, 1917. We enjoy lunch on our own along the way to Fatima. Following an early dinner, we visit the Sanctuary on our own; the tombs of Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia, ending with Mass that evening. As dusk approaches, we join pilgrims from around the world for the nightly Rosary and candlelight procession. Overnight at our hotel.
This morning, we journey north and celebrate Mass at Sao Francisco Church in Porto. We then drive to the magnificent church and sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, outside of Braga, the city known as the Portuguese Rome. Penitent pilgrims would make the zigzagging climb up the 577 steps to the Bom Jesus on their knees while praying continually. The Sanctuary may be reached by funicular (arial tramway) or by car. We enjoy lunch on our own before continuing to Santiago de Compostela, site of one of the most famous shrines and destination of an ancient pilgrimage route of St. James. (the famed Camino de Santiago). We enjoy dinner and overnight at our hotel.
Today, we tour the Old Town, then proceed to the Cathedral of Santiago, where the remains of St. James the Greater are entombed beneath the high altar. At noon, we celebrate Mass with the pilgrims, followed by lunch on our own with our afternoon at leisure. Tonight, we enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in this lovely Galician city. Overnight at our hotel.
This morning, following Mass, we travel east to the Galician province of Lugo and enter the Castilian territory of León. The city was founded under the name Legio VII as a Roman military outpost. Among its many treasures, three monuments are especially worthy of attention. The ostentatious gothic cathedral, aptly called the beautiful "leonina". Its stain-glass windows rival those of the Chartres cathedral of France. Following a break for lunch on our own, we visit the Romanesque jewel, the Pantheon of St. Isidoro, constructed in the eleventh century to house the mortal remains of this Saint, who died in the seventh century. We continue to our hotel for dinner and overnight
Today, we continue to Salamanca, a true marvel of renaissance art. The city glows in the golden color of the stone used in its innumerable monuments. The University is outstanding, and is among the three most ancient in Europe, having been founded in 1218AD, and proudly boasts of having had among its students and professors, such outstanding figures of the Spanish Golden Century as Brother Luis of Leon and Saint John of the Cross. After a break for lunch on our own, we visit its two cathedrals, one ancient in the Romanesque style, the other belonging to the late Gothic school. St. Theresa of Avila died in a village called Alba de Tormes near here. Her body is in a reliquary in the main altar of the Carmelite Convent Church there. Following Mass there, we continue to Avila for dinner and overnight.
This morning, we begin our day at the birthplace of St. Teresa of Jesus, (1515-1582), one of the Church's greatest and most influential mystics. Here we visit the Cathedral and the Convent of the Incarnation, where St. Teresa lived for three decades and St. John of the Cross, her spiritual director and confessor lived, for her last two years of her life. Following a stop for lunch on our own, we continue to Madrid where we visit all the highlights of this City, capital of Spain, including the Gran Via Plaza de España, the Viaduct, Plaza Major, the Bull Ring, Independence and Cibeles Squares, the University, and the Paseo de la Castellana. We continue to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Today, we travel to nearby Toledo, located along the Tagus River, Toledo has a colorful history, spending much off the first millennium under Muslim rule. We start at the Cathedral of Toledo, which was started in 1226AD but not completed until over 250 years later, in 1493AD! Using multiple colors of marble, adorned with stucco figurines and bronze castings, this Cathedral dramatically stands apart from most churches in the area built at that time. We celebrate Mass while there. After a break for lunch on our own, we continue our visit to the Franciscan Monastery known by “Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes,” which translates to the Monastery of St. John of the Monarchs but refers to St. John the Evangelist. Built in1477AD by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to celebrate the birth of their son, Prince John. We conclude our time in Toledo and travel back to Madrid for our “farewell” dinner at a restaurant near our hotel. Overnight at our hotel.
This morning, we transfer to the airport for our flight home with unforgettable memories to cherish always.
